Legislature approves up to $1.6 billion road bond sale

CHARLESTON — Members of the West Virginia Legislature Monday gave state officials permission to sell up to $1.6 billion in road bonds to pay for Gov. Jim Justice’s highway construction program.

Justice called lawmakers into special session to vote on the bond sales, which were approved by state voters during an Oct. 7 special election.

The road bond bill passed by the Senate and House of Delegates Monday would allow for the sale of up to $800 million in road construction bonds before July 1; up to another $400 million in bonds prior to July 1, 2019; up to $200 million in bonds before July 1, 2020; and up to $200 million before July 1, 2021.
